Malibu’s combination of salt air and Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones makes marine-grade powder-coated aluminum the standout choice: it won’t rust in the salt air and is non-combustible, which Zone 0 rules require within 5 feet of homes in fire zones. Vinyl resists corrosion well but, being combustible, isn’t suited to that ember-resistant buffer.

Malibu’s coastal policies protect public views from scenic roads and beaches and protect public lateral beach access, so fences can’t obstruct either in regulated areas. On bluff and roadside parcels we favor low, open, view-preserving designs such as aluminum pickets to stay compliant.
